Thai Massage at Siam Massage Therapist

Traditional Thai Massage is a combination of acupressure and yoga-like stretching techniques in which the therapist uses fingers, thumbs, elbows, arms and feet on the body’s muscles, pressure points and meridian energy lines to clear energy blockages and to bring balance to the energy of the body. Special loose garments are provided, as oils are not used for this treatment.

History

Thai Massage is fairly new to modern spas; but it is actually an ancient healing practice. It is thought to have been developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand 2,500 years ago. In the past, Thai Massage techniques were passed down from generation to generation orally within families as most people could not read or write. The formal manuscripts were written in ancient Pali by the Buddhist monks.

In 1767, many of the manuscripts were destroyed by the Burmese invaders. To help preserve the techniques, in 1832, King Rama III commanded his people to collect the remaining fragments of the original texts carved into stone as descriptive epigraphs at the Pra Chetupon Temple in Bangkok (popularly known as Wat Pho), thus enabling this valuable healing practice to continue today.

The Massage

Thai massage takes place on a futon mat on the floor, and you wear loose fitting clothing. The Siam Spa Retreat, provides you with an outfit to wear for the massage. The massage begins with you laying on your back, and the therapist uses gentle compression and stretching techniques to open up your body, beginning with you legs. Some people say Thai massage is a little like doing yoga without any effort, because the therapist will push your body into various positions without any work on your part.

Thai massage is done with all your clothes on, so some people recommend it if you feel uncomfortable with partial nudity such as during a Swedish or Aromatherapy massage. Because traditional Thai massage is quite vigorous, it is perhaps not the best choice for first-time spa-goers. The therapist literally uses his or her whole body, including her feet, to move your body into various positions during Thai massage, so in some ways it feels more intimate than a Swedish or Aromatherapy massage, where you lay on a massage table and are covered with sheets during the massage.
